Concrete has become a popular material choice for outdoor walkways and pathways due to many new decorative options. Gray is still the most popular concrete color, but there are many more color and pattern options that can create amazing results. Concrete comes in over 30 pre-mixed colors and 15 stained colors.

- Poured Concrete – If you want a smooth even surface, poured concrete is great. There are no seams and no patterns, unless you want them. Poured concrete can take on any shape and it can be scored or divided into sections when wet.
- Concrete Pavers – Concrete pavers come in various sizes, shapes and textures. Interlocking pavers come with edge spacers and joints that fit together like a puzzle. They don’t need grout or mortar. - Stamped Concrete – Stamped concrete mimics other outdoor walkway materials like stone or slate. By using different patterns and shapes, you can create a beautiful walkway that looks like more expensive natural stone.
Concrete offers a durable, resilient and cost-effective choice for your outdoor walkway. Concrete is suitable for all outdoor uses, including driveways. It has a slip-resistant surface and easily withstands freezing ground temperatures without cracking or chipping. It’s easy to clean and maintain with soap and water. For added protection from stains, Collins Landscaping offers an added option of sealing your new outdoor concrete walkway with a commericial grade concrete sealer. This is typically completed on a return visit, approximately two weeks after your outdoor walkway installation has been completed.

Natural stone is the most popular of all outdoor walkway building materials. It’s hard to beat the beauty of natural stone. It looks great in formal, casual and rustic landscapes. Stone pavers are available in granite, marble, limestone, travertine and slate. They come in rectangular and square shapes in various sizes from 6” x 12” up to 24” squares. They’re available in a variety of colors and in rough or polished finishes.
Natural stone walkway options include:
- Granite Walkways – Made from igneous rock found deep within the earth, granite is the hardest and least porous of all the natural stones. Granite is strong, durable and will hold up well in cold Massachusetts temperatures.
- Marble Walkways – A metamorphic rock with colorful veins that run through the stone. It’s available in many color variations and in rough or polished finishes. Marble is a porous building material and, as such, require a sealer for outdoor use.
- Limestone Walkways – Limestone contains traces of fossils from marine life and shellfish that give it a rich, light-colored appearance. Limestone is available in tumbled and polished finishes. Limestone is also porous and requires a sealer for outdoor use.
- Travertine Walkways – Similar to limestone, travertine contains lime deposits that give it variegated colors. Tavertine is available in multiple colors and in tumbled and polished finishes. Travertine is porous and requires a sealer when used outdoors.
- Slate Walkways – A strong, durable stone that holds up well in Massachusetts' climate. Slate’s strong color variations create a lot of texture and visual interest in your landscape design. Slate is a great option when you want to add contrast to your outdoor walkway.
Natural stone provides a beautiful, natural appearance. It has a naturally rough surface that creates texture. It provides a durable and resilient surface for your outdoor walkway, but it is porous and needs to be sealed once or twice a year for protection from spills, stains and adverse weather conditions. The main disadvantage of using natural stone is its’ higher cost.

Aggregate stone and rock are good options if you’re looking for outdoor walkway materials that have a natural, rustic charm. Aggregate stone and rock materials are great for natural, free-form gardens and more informal landscapes.
Aggregate stone and rock walkway options include:
- Aggregate Stone Walkways – Crushed stone, pea stone and other types of aggregate stones can create a very casual walkway. They are very inexpensive and easy to install. Collins Landscaping can create a more tailored look by adding edging or a foliage border between the walkway and the lawn if desired.
- Rock Walkways – Flagstone and river rock both work well for casual and rustic landscapes. They wear well without a sealer, but, as an added option, Collins Landscaping can seal your new rock walkway with a matte finish (retains natural look) sealer for added stain protection if you wish.
Aggregate stone and rock are very inexpensive to install. A walkway could be installed in a single day. Since these outdoor walkway building materials are loose stones, be aware that aggregate stone and rock is not the best option where snow & ice needs to be regularly removed. Additionally the stones can stick to your shoes or get kicked off your walkway and into your yard.

An accessible outdoor walkway should be smooth and free of obstructions. Ideally, the walkway should be at least 3.5 feet (42 inches) wide to provide enough room for a wheelchair. Any curves should be gentle rather than tight.
It’s easy to think of an outdoor walkway as only leading from the driveway to the front door, but if you regularly host gatherings in the backyard, it might be worth continuing the path all the way around your house. This way, someone with mobility issues won’t have to traverse the grass or go all the way through the house in order to access the backyard.
